Same as these, while buying gold, no matter a jewellery item or coin, there must be transparency between the jeweller and the consumer. But how one would know that?

In April 2000, the Bureau of Indian Standards first introduced the Hallmarking system in gold and silver jewellery. And from June 16, 2021, the Indian Government made it mandatory that a jeweller can only sell hallmarked gold jewellery. What is Hallmark Certification?

Hallmark certification, done by BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards) authorised hallmarking centres, is an authenticity certificate declaring the purity and fineness of gold in a jewellery item. There are some regulations for inscribing the certification on the jewellery product, and the sequence is like the BIS logo, the fineness number, the logo of the hallmarking centre, and at last, the logo of the jeweller.

Firstly the BIS Logo, which is a triangular symbol set by the Government to make an emblem, that will clarify the product a consumer is purchasing is authentic. As the logo can only be provided by a BIS-registered hallmarking centre, jewellery items with the BIS Hallmark logo are surely tested in those labs and given the hallmarking emblem.

Secondly, the Fineness Index ensures the consumer what he/she is purchasing, what is its purity, and much more. More about these indexes are written below in detail.

Thirdly, the hallmarking centre’s logo is inscribed just beside the fineness index. This logo is very much needed to be inscribed because it will help you or the Government while inspecting any discrepancy in the certificate. There is a unique logo for every BIS-registered hallmarking centre throughout the country.

Forth, the Jeweller’s logo remains also there just beside the hallmarking centre’s logo. The inscription of the jeweller’s name may be a logo, a trademark, a letter, or a mere but distinct number also.

Various Purity Indexes of Hallmarking

There are some fixed indexes, set by BIS, that are used for hallmarking gold jewellery products. At first, the hallmarking process was only for 14kt, 18kt, and 22kt jewellery items, but later it was made available for 9kt, 17kt, 21kt, and 23kt also. The fixed indexes are different for each purity scale. For 14kt, 18kt, and 22kt, the fineness scales are 585 (58.5%), 750 (75.0%), and 916 (91.6%) respectively. Why Hallmarking is Compulsory now?

In India, almost 5,00,000 goldsmiths, and 1,25,000 jewellers are spread throughout the whole country, and till now, some places lack a hallmarking centre. But, as most places do have such a centre for providing hallmarking services under the rule & regulations of BIS, selling gold jewellery without a hallmark is strictly restricted and a punishable offence as well. Actually, Hallmark is such an authenticity that ensures consumers’ trust, and faith towards the jeweller as well as the Government. Checking and asking your jeweller for Hallmark, while buying jewellery, is now your right as well. Gold jewellery is one of the most expensive products in the country, and with bare eyes, none can say a jewellery item whether it’s 14kt, 18kt, or 22kt, except an expert professional. So, never forget to ask for the hallmark certificate of the jewellery item you’re buying.
